Studio Residency at Tracks Dance Company

In response to the ongoing challenge of accessible space for the development of dance practice. Tracks is again offering an opportunity for Northern Territory dance artists to use our dance studio, free of charge, to work on contemporary choreographic development, either through research or development.

Make the most of this wet season to work in our air-conditioned studio. Availability will be organised in consultation around Tracks Dance’s scheduled working periods. There is no requirement to complete a work. However, there will be a showing and forum of the artist’s development with a small group of industry peers.

This residency is not for commercial practice, such as classes or for rehearsals for funded projects. Dance artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. There is no money attached to this opportunity.

Availability
Tracks Dance Studio has some times available from Nov 2014 until March 26th.

Eligibility
Contemporary dance artists living or working in the Northern Territory pursuing an innovative practice are eligible to apply.

Criteria
Successful artists are chosen on the basis of the quality and innovation of work, and the potential benefits to the applicant and to the broader community. Decisions are ultimately subject to the availability of the studio.

The number of successful applicants will depend on studio availability and time requirements of applicants, as well as:
• Calibre of artist / collaborating artists.
• Clear articulation of concept, rationale and process.
• Benefit of receiving the Studio Residency at this point in the development of a work OR to developing their practice.
• Benefit to the broader community.

Required Information
Proposals should address the applicant’s reasons for wanting to undertake the studio residency and an outline of their project (which may be simply to pursue independent studio practice, or cultural exchange opportunities, etc.)

1. Proposal/outline of project (No more than one page)
2. Preferred starting date and an estimate of studio time needed
3. 1 page CV/bio demonstrating dance activity

The deadline for proposals is Friday 28th November 2014

Milpirri documentary to be screened on NITV at 7.30pm on Saturday 1st November
The documentary film "Milpirri: Winds of Change" will be screened on NITV on November 1st, to coincide with this year’s event which is being held in Lajamanu.

In 2011, Tracks Dance Company approached PAW Media to see if they could document the Milpirri story. Key members of the Lajamanu community had for many years talked about wanting the Milpirri message to be more broadly heard. The community's remote location and limited visitors' accommodation has meant that only a small group of non-community members have been able to see the performance in Lajamanu. The documentary offered a way of letting a wider audience understand why Milpirri came to be and to better understand some of the key themes and ideas that underpin the performance.

Created over the past three years the film follows Wanta Jampijinpa Patrick. The film highlights the relationship between the Tracks Dance Company and the remote Warlpiri community of Lajamanu as they prepare for the 2012 Milpirri Festival, an exciting cross-cultural event. Milpirri clouds bring rain from the collision of opposites: the Milpirri event reminds us all, that to find our way ‘back home,’ we need to listen to ‘ngurra’, ‘home’ – the country we share.

Produced by PAW (Pintubi Anmajerre Warlpiri) Media and Communications in association People Pictures.
Directed by Wanta Jampijinpa and Stewart Carter. Edited by Cath South.
Duration: 54 minutes

Dance in Cool Spaces is presented by Tracks Dance with the support of Darwin City Council

Tracks Dance is proud to host the 2014 iteration of Creative Producer Britt Guy’s annual six-week transitory cultural and artistic residency for four experimental dance artists from Slovenia, Croatia, and Australia, that invests in:

Nourishing artists culturally and intellectually

Providing an opportunity to reflect and flesh out future project outcomes

Developing independent international relationships

Engaging local artistic communities in new international artistic conversations and experience

Four artists are selected each year and spend two weeks in each country participating in a diverse program of activities created by local hosts. One artist is selected from Slovenia and Croatia and two artists from Australia, one from Queensland and one from the state of the regional host. Jess Devereux, the Tracks Dance Animateur, is one of the chosen artists.

As part of their aim to engage local communities in new international artistic conversations and experiences, the dancers will be taking morning warm-ups, Tue 12–Thu 14 Aug. See here for further information.

Then on Sat 16 Aug, join the Exchange participants at Tracks Dance Studio for Reflection, an insight into their experiences, from 2pm.

Curated and produced by Britt Guy, an initiative supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, Darwin Festival and Junction Arts Festival. This project is supported by Tracks Dance Company.
