Our Company is Our Community
Tracks Dance, Darwin’s premier performing arts company, celebrates 25 years under the Artistic Direction of David McMicken AM and Tim Newth AM.
In 2001, the Company began an exciting artistic relationship with Mark Marcelis (a photographer and art director) and Tim Palmer, who together are the creators of Resident Magazine.
Tim Newth, a visual artist himself, began to notice Mark’s photography and graphic design work in the late 1990s. This slick and glossy work seemed to speak of a new and sophisticated Darwin that was emerging and Tracks wanted to be a part of this.
“Around about the year 2000, I remember looking at a promotional card that David had on the dashboard of his car. It was of
Crystal Love, someone we knew as a young boy in Lajamanu and was now performing at Throb nightclub. The image was so slick and glossy it made Crystal look like a superstar. I said to David “Why don’t we do this for our shows?” David said, “Let’s talk to Mark”. This was the beginning of Tracks’ relationship with Mark Marcelis. The posters we have created together are a who’s who of dance in Darwin. Some of these Territorians have gone on to careers in the performing arts, while others have chosen different career paths such as bankers, doctors, students, builders or parents. All the posters tell the story of dance as a whole of life activity and all are windows into our contemporary Territory lives, celebrating who we are and where we live.” Tim Newth
The exhibition ’Our Company is our Community’ is a display of all the posters Tracks and Mark have created together over the years. All the posters tell the story of dance as a whole of life activity and all are windows into our contemporary Territory lives, celebrating who we are and where we live.

"Tracks have been part of Darwin's cultural landscape since the 1990s. Tracks have never been just performers on a stage, they become a genuine part of every community they work in." Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim
