2012/13 Studio Residencies

Text

Tracks Dance Studio, Frog Hollow Centre for the Arts, Darwin City

October 2012 - March 2013

In the wet season down time of 2012/2013, Tracks initiated an opportunity for choreographers and dance artists to use the dance studio space at Tracks Dance free of charge. The Studio Residency program originated in response to the ongoing challenge facing local dance artists of limited access to space for the development of dance practice and contemporary dance ideas.

Although there was no requirement to have a presentation at the conclusion, we strongly encouraged a showing of the development in order to encourage feedback from peers and audience. This residency was not for commercial practice, such as classes or for rehearsals for funded projects. Contemporary dance artists of all backgrounds pursuing an innovative practice were eligible to apply.

Successful artists were chosen on the basis of the quality and innovation of their work, and the potential benefits to the applicant and to the broader community, based on the following criteria:

• Calibre of artist/collaborating artists

• Clear articulation of conceptual rationale and process

• Benefit of receiving the Studio Residency at this point in the development of a work, or to developing their practice

• Benefit to the broader community

Creative Personnel

Successful applicants were:

D*City Rockers

Darwin’s premier break dance crew, who were wanting to develop teaching skills to train up and coming break dancers.

Anokai Lancaster

An independent dance artist who was interested in exploring a strongly emotionally based vocabulary.

Bryn Wackett

A local dancer and teacher, who had recently returned from a choreo-lab in Sydney and wanted to continue her new found interest in choreography.

Jenelle Saunders

A dancer and teacher, who wanted to reinvigorate her dance practice and to do this with other dancers (Bryn Wackett and Lizzi Webb).

Kinetic

A dance group from Brisbane who were wanting to discuss, document and assess the viability of a future collaboration with Timorese artists and social activists on a performance piece to tour both Timor-Leste and Australia.

Showing

A showing of processes and open forum was held in the Tracks Studio on March 12th 2013
