Darwin City, Smith Street Mall and Surrounds
Conceived, developed and directed by the Artistic Co-Directors, the annual major production will be an original site specific work reflecting a unique connection between people and place. By utilizing community and cultural relationships as the creative foundation the production will be a platform for professional dancers, passionate amateurs and community dancers of diverse cultures, age and artistic disciplines to create movement together.
A perambulatory experience of site specific work building on the notion of City Spacemakers (an international movement that uses interventions to help make our cities, buildings and spaces work better).
G.P.S combines the ephemeral nature of site specific dance work with choreography that allows dance makers to add their own imprint into the living memory of the city through changing a place by association.
Five Dance Animateur/choreographers will work with community and professional dancers to create new dance works in sites around the Darwin Mall. The Artistic Directors work to bridge the narrative for the overall work and performance experience.
How do we read or experience Darwin city Smith Street Mall and adjoining lanes and arcades, a human made construct? What are the lenses that we view it through?
History: past experience, layers of memory
Efficiency: getting from A to B, a network of streets and lanes to travel
Temperature: weather, air conditioning, water, shade, a breeze
Social: a place to meet, to eat, to shop
