Homebodies (Online and at Home)

In 2020, like most Australians, dance artists were required to work from home for a time. We were at the beginning of dealing with COVID 19 as a world pandemic and many things were unknown. 'Homebodies' was designed to maintained relationships with twelve Darwin artists, (at a time we could not come together in a studio), by engaging them in a collection of shared online workshops, resulting in solo works created and filmed within the artists’ home environments. A secret future film duet (unbeknown to the artists) was imagined with paired dance scores and instructions being the starting point for the solos. 

Darwin's COVID situation was different to other Australian Capital cities and did not go through severe and extended lockdowns. Given our unique tropical lifestyle, people’s idea of what home is often extends beyond four walls: from the lounge to the dry season bushland, to the cliff-faces at the edge of the ocean.

Homebodies (Warehouse Installation)

In 2021, as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival, the individual solo films were to be drawn together into an art installation. Six short films of each of the duet pairings were created and a final film drew together all twelve solos. Secrets are revealed as connections are made across pairings, and an overall image of what we love and why we live in this place rises to a point of celebration.

The Installation was to be set within an industrial warehouse and laneway, where audiences could determine their own pathway and navigate their experience. Sadly, Fringe organisers made the tough decision to cancel the festival days before it was due to start as a result of COVID lockdowns and restrictions.

Homebodies (Gallery Installation)

On November 6th the Homebodies film (drawing together all twelve solos) won 'Best Experimental Film' at the 2021 Fist Full of Films Festival Awards Night at the Deckchair Cinema.

The award was supported by Darwin Visual Arts Gallery, as a result, their multimedia gallery space was awarded to Tracks to show the Homebodies film during the gallery's members exhibition.

The Gallery Installation includes the winning film, accompanied by the six films of each of the duet pairings.
