Cloud Split
A spontaneous duet
Exploring connection and tenderness, framed by imagery of the moody skies of the Top End, Cloud Split investigated the sublime unknowns of improvised performance, seeking to physicalise unpredictable natural phenomena.
Devised by Jess Devereux in conversation with Britt Guy. Performed by SJ Spillett and Kelly Beneforti, with a lush experimental soundtrack by James Mangohig and environmental moving images of the NT by Duane Preston. A long-form project with an incremental development approach, developed across a 10 month time span. At the centre was an intimate performance in the Tracks Studio for Darwin Festival 2024, with a backdrop of mirrors and projection providing special effect. A love letter to the clouds.
With a Welcome to Country by Cyan Sue Lee, specially recorded for the project by James Mangohig
Audience Responses
"A stunning and tender offering of stories to be drawn into, colour tonality and range of energetic textures… intention and attention, sensory connection, converging of elements, skies shifting and merging and embodied conversations." Jenelle Saunders
"I feel excited when I think of the process, the trust and the responsiveness to ideas and the spontaneous choreographic experiences and piecings together of all of the elements. Beautiful, big, round, ether-filled, floating, soaring love." Bryn Wackett
“Cloud split was absolutely stunning! It was so emotive... the transitions between each of the sections was so smooth and the whole piece was powerful—it really took me on a journey...it was so overwhelmingly what I needed to see.” Venaska Cheliah
Cloud Split was shortlisted for Performance of the Year, 2024 NT Performing Arts Awards, Dancer Kelly Beneforti won Best Performer, and Duane Preston won Best Behind The Scenes Production.
