Choreolab offers an exceptional and vibrant setting to dive deep into the realms of choreography, collaboration, and dance-making. Over 10 weeks, participants embarked on a journey to discover and hone their choreographic talents, all within a supportive and relaxed group atmosphere. The experience culminates in the creation of captivating short movement works, guided by the Tracks Artistic Leadership Team.
This dynamic program is co-led by Jenelle Saunders and David McMicken, who are joined by guest facilitators throughout the course; James Mangohig, who brings his musical production expertise, Alyson Evans, who enriches the experience with insights from theatre and characterisation, Rachael Wallis, who infuses the program with perspectives from First Nations and contemporary practices, and Kelly Beneforti with a wealth of contemporary dance and embodied practices
Choreolab kicks off with an immersive one-day intensive, plunging participants into a playful atmosphere that sparks choreographic creativity. This program is tailored for those who possess some level of experience in dance, movement, or performance - regardless of style—or for individuals engaged in current arts practices, all united by a shared curiosity about the art of choreography and the theatre and music elements that enhance it. Join us in this collaborative exploration where imagination meets movement!
The course started in 2009 and has had 117 participants so far. The individuals come from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and artistic disciplines, including various dance styles, visual arts, circus, mask work, physical theatre, theater, playwriting, music, teaching, and dance therapy. Many participants have taken the course more than once.
Flourish - The Showing
28th March, 2026, 4 pm
Getting in on the ground floor and seeing these artists at the beginning of this creative journey.
We are still in our rainy times, and everything is green, you could say, flourishing. And so are our chorelab participants. Concluding the Choreolab course, these participants are ready to share their process, their dance sketches, and their valuable insights into their emerging practice. Experience first-hand the encounters, joys, challenges, and initial steps of the participants—referred to as "choreolabbers"—as they begin their journey in movement creation.
Choreolab has been an integral part of the Tracks Development Program since 2009, offering a unique, specialised environment to delve into choreography, collaboration, devising, and dance-making. Choreolab offers artists and arts workers in the Northern Territory a unique opportunity to explore the creative process of arts-making, even without formal training in dance and choreography. The program not only provides choreographic lessons that help participants make their bodies more articulate and expressive but also incorporates elements of storytelling, theatre, and music for dance.
