HON CHIEF JUSTICE MICHAEL GRANT AO

Michael Grant is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.  At the time of his appointment in July 2016, he held office as the Solicitor-General for the Northern Territory since 2007.  Prior to that time he practised as a barrister at William Foster Chambers in Darwin.  He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2006, he first Territory-born practitioner to be commissioned as a QC in the Northern Territory.

Mr Grant holds a Bachelor of Laws degree with first class honours conferred by the University of Queensland. He completed articles of clerkship with the Northern Territory Attorney-General's Department, and then worked as a solicitor-advocate with the Crown Solicitor’s Office. In 1998, he was appointed as Director of Litigation with the Northern Territory Attorney-General's Department and spent various periods acting as its Chief Executive Officer before joining the private bar. He has also lectured in Law at the Charles Darwin University and served as President of the Health Professional Review Tribunal.
